JURASSIC WORLD : CAMP CRETACEOUS - (Proof of Concept)

This is the story animatic for the Proof of Concept which we used to test our production pipeline prior to shipping or first episodes to animation. Essentially we had to build a sequence that would test every single asset we had ready (from animation rigs, simulations, performance, effects, lighting, etc) as well as our pre production a shipping process all the way to final comp and sound in post.

AND it could only be a minute long.
AND it was my first assignment! I was hired on a Thursday and was asked to have this into edit for an animatic review the following Friday. I didn’t know if how to draw the characters, I had never even drawn a dinosaur before! So this was a i bit of a crash course for me. But MASSIVELY beneficial in getting caught up to the production tempo.

For me, this was not only a Proof of Concept for our technical processes, but also a Proof of Concept for our Show - our style, tone, storytelling, everything. I tried to bring the excitement and danger of the show, the fun (and maybe a little Spielberg inspired humor) to the piece. I feel like it came out pretty well.

JURASSIC WORLD : CAMP CRETACEOUS - Ep Season 2 Ep 2 - “The Art of Chill” - Kenji and Yaz

I joined the show a few episodes in on the first season so this episode, which was episode 10 in the production order, was my first full episode to direct (having taken over the animatic and revision process on earlier eps) .

I always loved this scene. This marks a turning point not only for the characters of Kenji and Yaz individually, but also for their relationship to each other. They are a perfect odd couple. One being entitled and lazy, the other being self motivated and driven to work, yet both loners. The animatic above begins with some really incredible boards drawn by the great Megan Lloyd follow up with revisions that I made to the animatic later in the story process. The purpose of the scene is to show the turning point of their relationship. The TRICK of the scene is that NEITHER of them WANT to change. So we had to find a way (and take the time) to GET the characters into a place where THEY choose to make the change.
